Elephant Stone Play Mercury Lounge Tonight / The Horrors' Remix of "A Silent Moment" Posted As A Free Download

Yesterday, Elephant Stone commemorated the launch of their Eastern US tour by releasing The Horrors' Tom Furse Remix of "A Silent Moment". The transcontinental collaboration was born of a chance meeting at Coachella that quickly developed into Elephant Stone's Rishi Dhir and Furse's frequent work on one another's projects.

Recently, Elephant Stone premiered the third video from their self-titled sophomore record, "Love The Sinner, Hate The Sin" which was followed quickly by Dhir's appearance with Beck at Osheaga Music and Arts Festival, before the band began their US tour earlier this week in Burlington, VT and continue to support the powerful self-titled sophomore record, released earlier this year via Hidden Pony and The Reverberation Appreciation Society.



Tonight's show is an early show with doors at 6:30PM and Elephant Stone is going on first (at 6:30PM, according to Mercury Lounge's website). Also on the bill are jangle-rockers Desert Noises (set time at 7:30PM) and psych-rocker Morning Teleportation (8:30PM set time). Tickets are $10.

Automatic Children Play An Early Show Tomorrow Night at Mercury Lounge (along with Emanuel and the Fear)

The always brilliant Automatic Children return to Mercury Lounge for an early show tomorrow night, opening for Emanuel and the Fear.

"We last played there in 2010 to promote our then-new album "New is Beautiful." This time we are playing the early show opening for this great 6-piece Brooklyn band. You may have heard about them in The Guardian, Paste, Rolling Stone (Germany), Paper Magazine, NME, Village Voice, or recently on Daytrotter. NYC collective Automatic Children sound a little bit like every cool rock band your older sibling or somewhat friendly record store clerk told you about growing up, thrown into a blender and spit out, creating an entirely potent blend of upbeat, guitar-driven pop. 

On their latest 7" Johnny/Now You Know, loud hooks recall Surfer Rosa-era Pixies, while the high-registered vocal delivery of Adam Lippman echoes The Get Up Kids, matched with the world/weary smarts of Paul Westerberg. Influences aside, the simple fact is that Automatic Children are a rock band, streamlined to the basics, who have taken the best of the best and reflected it back in their own way, creating music for discerning fans who are too old to care about trends and like their rock lean, fun, and unpretentious. 

Rounded out with Ed Vail (bass/backing vocals) and Kevin Letsch (drums) Automatic Children is at heart the combined songwriting efforts of Adam Lippman and Crista Giuliani. The two met when Adam auditioned Crista to sing and play backup in his solo band in 2006. Once the connection was made and the chemistry and mutual influences obvious after a few shows, the decision to form a proper band was solidified and the rest is history.

"The music is based on our lives, and our experiences, with a little bit of politics thrown in," explains Lippman. Adds Crista, "I think with multiple songwriters, you get a very diverse sound. I think it's good to have different songs for different moods. Who would want to eat the same thing every night for dinner? "

Dead Boots (featuring Adrian and Tony Perry) are Playing Mercury Lounge on July 17th with Midnight Spin

While Boston's Dead Boots are making their NYC debut at Mercury Lounge on July 17th, the band came through town a few times over the last year under their previous name, TAB the Band.  Most recently, TAB the Band opened for both Jane's Addiction at Terminal 5 in late 2012 and, earlier this year, opened for the The Annuals at Mercury Lounge.

Dead Boots features Aerosmith's Joe Perry's two sons Tony (guitar) and Adrian (vocals/bass) along with Ben Tileston (drums) and Louie Jannetty (guitar).  While the Aerosmith connection might lead one to make assumptions about the band's sound, the initial tracks that I've heard from Dead Boots' debut album, Verónica, have a glam rock sound that is comparable to bands like Cheap Trick and T. Rex.  

For the show at Mercury Lounge, Dead Boots are headlining the late show.  They take the stage at 10:30PM and Brooklyn's Midnight Spin are going on first at 9:30PM.  Tickets are $10 in advance and $12 DOS.  Dead Boots have posted to their Facebook page that "Everyone who comes out to our 7/17 show at Mercury Lounge with Midnight Spin gets a FREE copy [of Verónica]".



A rock and roll band with an enduring fondness for pure pop and a wicked, sly sense of humor, Dead Boots defy easy categorization. They love The Beatles and Cheap Trick as much as T-Rex and The Rolling Stones, yet as much as Dead Boots draw on classic rock influences, they are a vibrant, contemporary band that blends the vigor of punk, the might of arena rock and the melodicism of power-pop, earning the admiration of Isaac Brock of Modest Mouse, Perry Farrell of Jane’s Addiction and J Mascis of Dinosaur Jr, alt-rock stalwarts who requested the band as their opening act.

Dead Boots may be the best example of how great things can come from no expectations. Brothers Adrian and Tony Perry began the group almost as a lark. “I grew up in LA,” explains Adrian, “and whenever I came to visit Tony, we’d always record stuff for fun.” Adrian had a few serious bands while he was in high school and college, continuing to occasionally play with Tony. “A few years ago we said, let’s mess around and record some songs,” remembers Adrian. "Tony invited his friend Ben Tileston to have real drum tracks. We ended up writing nine songs in a week -- it was very organic. Before we knew it, we had a show booked.”

Since then, the band has toured extensively in the US, Canada and UK, supporting acts such as Stone Temple Pilots, Cage the Elephant, Black Rebel Motorcycle Club, and Slash. The band has also played major US and UK festivals such as Lollapalooza, the Hyde Park Calling Festival, Download Festival, Mountain Jam, CMJ and SXSW and headlined John Varvatos Thursday Night Live at 315 Bowery.

“We started almost like a punk band,” explains Adrian. “We focused on writing short, hard rock songs. It was like sticking it to the weird twee indie rock we’ve been inundated with.” That punk attitude can be heard on the group’s first two full-length albums, Pulling Out Just Enough to Win and Long Weekend, both released in 2008. The band expanded its horizons on 2010's Zoo Noises, a free-wheeling, all-encompassing carnival ride, fueled by such intoxicating singles as the percussive “She Said No (I Love You)” and the breakneck hooks of “Bought and Sold”. All three records were written, engineered, recorded and produced by the band with no outside input.

The band added another member in Lou Jannetty, an old friend of the Perrys’ who showed up on several of the homemade tapes the brothers made in their youth. The band's new album, Verónica (out July 16th), is the first album that Lou has been involved with start to finish. The quartet spent two years concentrating on the new record, more time than it has spent on any prior record, with Tony taking the engineering and production reins. “This is our most mature record,” says Adrian, “it's the culmination of everything we've been through and the best distillation of all of our influences to date. It's a more focused record than Zoo Noises yet is also more adventurous.” Dead Boots are still a rock & roll band at heart but belong to this moment, pulling together elements of the past and present in exciting ways. “Rather than segregating influences, we put them all together. If people listen to the whole album, they’ll get a sense that we can do a lot.”

Alessi's Ark - 'The Still Life' CD Review / Show at Mercury Lounge on June 14th (Bella Union)

I listen to a lot of CDs and it is generally fairly easy to find an immediate reference point but Alessi's Ark's third disc, The Still Life, takes a lot of pleasantly surprising twists and turns which showcases the maturity of 22 year-old singer Alessi Laurent-Marke's songs. The thirteen-track / 32 minute disc incorporates a wide range of styles, which combine "Suzanne Vega-style" semi-confessional, personal lyrics with with a range of music styles that includes 'electonica' dance beats, dream-pop and 90's alt-rock and the instrumentation and percussion is surprisingly complex and diverse.

Only a few short years into her career, the London-based Laurent-Marke – who began playing music and launched a fanzine, Brain Bulletin, during her secondary school years in West London – is already prolific: her first, self-released EP, 2007’s Bedroom Bound, garnered the then-teenage artist a major label deal and attention around the globe.  While The Still Life still has strong ties to Laurent-Marke's acoustic/folky roots, this new disc is much more experimental and varied than previous outings. 

“I wanted to create a musical landscape that varied in sound,” Laurent-Marke says, “but an overriding feeling of ‘stillness’ remained throughout the album. I also wanted to step back from playing acoustic guitar and immerse the songs in very different sound settings from previous recordings.”

While the music on The Still Life takes a number of twists and turns, the centerpiece of all of the songs is Laurent-Marke's clear and upfront (and frequently waife-like) vocals.  The disc opens with "Tin Smithing" which grabs the listener's ear right away with  innovative, syncopated percussion and big backing vocals on the chorus.  Immediately shifting gears on the next number, "Veins are Blue" has a shuffling 60's beat, a call-and-response sing-along chorus and hints of shoe-gazer echo in some of the the guitar work.  Seemingly never content to stand still, "The Rain" fully makes the plunge into shoegazer territory but adds an electronica/trip-hop backbeat.  Coming full circle back to her earlier work, this track is followed by "The Good Song", a wistful folky number.  While there are a lot of strong tracks on this disc, my favorite is a cover of The National's "Afraid of Everyone", which is recast with a slow-burning, dance club beat and dark vocals harmonies that bring bring back fond memories of the best elements of Luscious Jackson.

The diverse range of styles on this disc shouldn't scare anyone off as Laurent-Marke's vocals provide an anchor and common ground between all of the tracks and this is complemented by producer Andy LeMaster's warm and shimmery productions.  “I hope that this album is good company for the listener,” says Laurent-Marke, “I tried to create something that would leave them happy, leave them with a feeling of peace. To me, the best thing an album can be is a friend you can rely on.”

Nathan Xander (Indie-Americana) Plays an Early Show at Mercury Lounge on November 19th

"...it's sad, haunting, beautiful, universal and lingers in your brain... Nathan Xander's songs are simple but smart, sparse but with space and definitely get to the heart of matters of the heart." - Reglar Wiglar

'Indie-Americana' probably isn't an accurate label (but I couldn't come up with anything better) as this isn't the 'rustic alt-country twang' of many of the artists who occupy the Americana genre. Xanders' new self-titled disc is moody and haunting and has more in common with artists like Chris Isaak, though he doesn't go down the 'Roy Orbison path' as Isaak did. I hadn't heard of Nathan Xander prior to receiving an email about Monday night's show and was planning on posting something quickly and getting back to work on some other projects but found myself getting drawn in by his new disc which should translate well to the live stage, given the intimacy of Mercury Lounge.



The show at Mercury Lounge starts at 6:30PM which is the listed time for both doors and Xanders' set time. Water Liars take the stage at 7:30PM and advance tickets are $10.

James Iha (x-Smashing Pumpkins) Streams New Album on TeamCoco / Tickets Still Available for Show at Mercury Lounge on Oct. 5th

James Iha is proud to premiere his new solo album Look to Sky - an exciting collection of sophisticated pop melodies, lyrical sharpness and guitar driven rock - a week before it's September 18th release on Conan O'Brien's Team Coco.

Look to Sky sees Iha returning as a solo artist after nearly a decade and a half, newly inspired, a little wiser and proud to share what he's learned and created. "I feel like everything should lead up to something and this is a culmination of my journey".

Perhaps best known as a co-founding member and longtime guitarist for Smashing Pumpkins, James has gathered musical depth and craftsmanship inspired by his many bands (A Perfect Circle, Tinted Windows) as well as his production work (Cat Power, The Yeah Yeah Yeahs), to create this new album that offers listeners a wide range of sounds that touch upon each aspect of James' impressive career.

Songs such as "Speed Of Love" "Gemini" and "To Who Knows Where," three of the ten impressive tracks that tie together James' diverse and stylistic career, showcase his talents as a musician, songwriter, lyricist, arranger, and producer.

Look to Sky was produced by James and Nathan Larson of Shudder To Think and features special guests Karen O and Nick Zinner of The Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Sara Quin of Tegan and Sara, Nina Persson of the Cardigans, Fountain Of Wayne's Adam Schlesinger and Tom Verlaine, frontman of New York rock band Television.

"I like the idea of that feeling you have when you're young and you're lying in the grass and looking up at the sky, and you get that feeling of how big the world is" says Iha. "It's a very cinematic moment that captured the overall feel of the album to me. Also, the title sounded like a phrase you'd hear in a '50s B-movie, like a directive: 'The aliens are coming. Look to the sky.' I mean it from the point of view of, 'Look all around you. Here's this incredible world we're in and there are all these beautiful things happening.'"

After a successful performance at this year's Fuji Rock Festival, James will return to Japan this September for a run of tour dates followed by a string of East Coast US shows. Tour Dates below, more to be announced.



Finding success producing and remixing songs for Ladytron and Michael Stipe (among others), James recently remixed a track for the upcoming Halo 4 remix album to be released this October.

The Damn Choir: Chicago Folk-Pop Band Plays Late Show at Mercury Lounge on August 9th

Chicago's The Damn Choir, who Venture Mag called an "introspective downbeat version of Mumford & Sons", is back in town for a late show at Mercury Lounge (supporting Stand) on August 9th. The Damn Choir are touring behind their second disc, You’re my Secret Called Fire, which was released this past May and the band made the most of Chicago’s long winter by filming a labor-intensive stop motion music video for their song “Noah”. This album continues where the band's debut, Faithful Fools, left off; with similar themes and vocalist/guitarist Gordon Roberston’s recognizable voice, but the fullness of a band whose members each contributed creatively in a big way.

Tickets are $12 in advance and $15 DOS. Doors are at 9:30PM which likely means that The Damn Choir will take the stage at 10PM (call the club to confirm).



The Damn Choir's use of guitar, cello, vocals and drums, along with Gordon Robertson's introspective lyrics, create songs that range from meandering and melancholic to pulsing and vengeful.

The Damn Choir began in January of 2009 on a freezing and fated night in Chicago. Gordon Robertson sat slumped at the bar, drowning his post-horrific-break-up dejected self in whiskey and happened to meet cellist Katy Myers. Although at first Myers rejected Robertson's musical advances, eventually she gave in and agreed to give him a chance.

Within weeks the two were musically inseparable and involved in an (arguably unhealthy) co-dependant friendship. After playing for months under the name, “Gordon and Katy,” the two recorded an album, “Faithful Fools,” re-named the band, and began the journey that would lead them to eventually recruiting Ryan Farnham on drums, Otis Duffy on electric guitar, Brandon Stein on bass, and Jack McClain on percussion.

The Doc Marshalls’ front man, Nick Beaudoing, has arrived in Nashville armed with an album that still reeks of Brooklyn, his former home. Whereas previous releases evoked a humid musical landscape along the Texas-Louisiana border, the Doc Marshalls’ new album, Look Out, Compadre, sheds the honky-tonk and Cajun two-steps in favor of crooked, shimmering folk reminiscent of Bonnie Prince Billy and A.A. Bondy.

This hard left turn comes on the heels of years of preaching roots music in indie rock venues, where country flavors are seldom heard. Look Out, Compadre is a surprising and welcome departure, demonstrating that even hardcore country boys are unable to keep the city at bay forever.



Eager to capture the moment of a signature sound in flux, the band enlisted engineer Alex Lipsen at Headgear Studio in Williamsburg, Brooklyn (Phosphorescent, Nada Surf) with the goal of recording in an atmosphere where instruments like the fiddle and pedal steel would be treated as outsiders. Session musicians such as guitarist Josh Kaufman (Dawn Landes, Rocketship Park) further sharpen the edges of songs whose lyrics spin tales of last stands, exploding houses, and the calm that forgiveness brings.

A versatile repertoire has taken the Doc Marshalls from indie rock clubs in NYC, to rural Texas dancehalls, Europe, and countless festival stages in between. Their busy touring schedule has afforded them the opportunity to open for the likes of Bobby Bare Jr., Carrie Rodriguez, the Bottle Rockets, and even reggae legend Burning Spear.

The Doc Marshalls are playing a record release show at Mercury Lounge on June 10th. This is a late show - opener Benyaro (indie acoustic soul and roots power duo) is going on at 9PM and The Doc Marshalls are going on at 10PM. Advance tickets are $10 and the show is 21+.

First Aid Kit Release Video for "The Lion's Roar" / Show at Mercury Lounge on Nov. 16th

First Aid Kit - The Lion's Roar by Wichita Recordings

First Aid Kit - Swedish sisters Klara and Johanna Söderberg - premiered the video for "The Lion's Roar", the title-track of their upcoming sophomore album, on SPIN.com earlier this week. Directed by Mats Udd, the moody and mystical video is embedded below.

"The Lion's Roar" single is now available exclusively on iTunes and will be found at all major digital retailers, and sold as a 7-inch at the band's shows, beginning November 8th. The 7-inch will also be released in stores on December 6th. First Aid Kit will release The Lion's Roar LP on January 24th, 2012 via Wichita Recordings.



After recently performing on three UK dates with Lykke Li, First Aid Kit will head to the US later this week to support their fellow Swede on a three-week tour. The Söderbergs will also headline two US shows of their own: November 8th at The Troubadour in Los Angeles and November 16th at the Mercury Lounge in New York. Alessi's Ark is supporting First Aid Kit for the show at Mercury Lounge. This is an early show with Alessi's Ark going on at 6:30PM and First Aid Kit at 7:30PM. Tickets are $15.

First Aid Kit will perform live in-studio on KCRW's Morning Becomes Eclectic on November 8th. Following the US shows, the band will return to Europe for eight headlining shows that run through early December.

The follow up to last year's highly-praised debut LP The Big Black & The Blue, The Lion's Roar finds First Aid Kit at their finest, singing bittersweet songs that frequently juxtapose sadness and beauty. Whether the glorious title track opener, the achingly lovely "Emmylou", or the exuberant final track "King Of The World" (featuring Conor Oberst and The Felice Brothers), the Söderbergs' evocative, preternatural harmonies and remarkable songwriting take centerstage throughout the album.

First Aid Kit recorded The Lion's Roar with Mike Mogis (of Bright Eyes and Monsters Of Folk; also producer of Cursive, Lightspeed Champion, Pete Yorn, and many others) in May at his ARC Studios in Omaha, NE. The Bigamy: More Songs From The Monogamy Sessions tour EP will be sold on CD and vinyl only at Kasher's upcoming August and September headlining shows and in the Saddle Creek webstore, where it is now available for pre-order. The EP will also be available digitally beginning August 16th.

The Bigamy: More Songs From The Monogamy Sessions tour EP features seven new songs loosely linked to and written during the same period as Kasher's debut solo album The Game Of Monogamy, released last October by Saddle Creek. Telling stories of mixed emotions, heartbreak, and adulthood restlessness, the songs range sonically from the slow-burning opener "No Harmony" to the syncopated pop of "A Bluer Sea" to the evocative swell of "Rabbit, Run". Bigamy... also features an epic cover of Azure Ray's "Trees Keep Growing" - all buzzing guitars and crashing drums - that Kasher has wanted to record for some time. The EP was predominantly self-recorded this spring in various local locations and at the Sleepy House studio in Omaha; "A Bluer Sea" was recorded at SnowGhost Music in Whitefish, MT, at the same time as Monogamy.

A Million Years Headline Two Nights @ Mercury Lounge on July 21st and July 22nd

Brooklyn indie-rockers A Million Years had a lot of people stop and take notice after releasing their debut CD, Mischief Maker, last summer. The disc was produced by Shannon Ferguson of Longwave and AbsolutePunk described it as the "lovechild of Interpol and As Tall as Lions". The band played a number of high-profile shows last year with artists that included 30 Seconds to Mars, Phoenix, The Drums and Jesse Malin and ended the year being voted #4 in Deli Magazine's "Best of 2010 NYC Emerging Artists" poll.

After selling out Mercury Lounge (in advance of the show) this past February, the band has been asked to headline two shows at the club on July 21st and July 22nd. For the show on July 21st, A Million Years are playing with Bellevue's Finest (set time 10:15PM) and Whale's Belly (set time 9:30PM). Tickets are $10 are doors are at 9PM. For the show on July 22nd, A Million Years are playing a late show with The Canon Logic (set time 10:30PM). Tickets for this show are also $10 and there is a two-day ticket for $16.

Marissa Nadler: Boston Dream-Folk Artist Kicks Off July Headlining Tour // Shows at Mercury Lounge and Littlefield

American gothic / dream-folk artist Marissa Nadler just released the follow-up to her well-received 2009 disc Little Hells and is playing a short run of headlining dates in support of the new release. This new self-titled release came out of Nadler's Box of Cedar label and The Tune described the new disc as "a delicately-crafted affair executed with poise and grace -- this music is nothing short of brilliant."

Marissa released her last two albums on Kemado (and Mexican Summer, which was named after one of her songs), and decided to venture out on her own for this new album. She financed the recording through a successful Kickstarter campaign, and has sold her own handmade albums through Etsy. After performing several dates with Low and Timber Timbre, she'll be embarking on a headlining tour throughout July with Faces On Film.
